About Me
Martial Arts
In addition to a passion for traditional education, I am also very invested in the world of martial arts. I currently hold a third degree black belt in Songahm taekwondo and a first degree black belt in Krav Maga.
In December 2021 I took the in-seat exam (as well as the physical exam and demonstration of 10 separate forms as well as weapon techniques) for the Level 3 instructor certification and passed! At this time I may be conferred the title of Chief Instructor, which is very exciting! My new goal is to certify in Weapons--I am currently certified in Level 1 Weapons and am studying for Level 2. Additionally, I am also a Level 3 certified instructor in Tactical Application Concepts (TAC) Krav Maga, and may be conferred the title of chief instructor in that style as well.
Although martial arts may seem like a dangerous sport, I am all about safety first: I am certified in First Aid/CPR/AED through the American Red Cross until 2024 and I firmly believe in taking care of both myself and my students as we practice these safe but practical martial arts.
Building a Sustainable Earth
Like a lot of people here in the Kansas City Metro, I'm very interested in how I can reduce my carbon footprint, increase my self-reliance, and lastly help out our native plants.
All that being said, over the past few years I've built a nicely-sized urban garden of multiple raised beds, and have also taken to raising my own chickens. Although my dogs aren't big fans of the hens (well, they are in their own way!), they produce fresh eggs as well as a great source of amusement for us. Despite being the real life 'angry birds', they seem to enjoy their quiet life in our backyard and also enjoy the occasional tomato fresh off the vine from our garden. We ended up building a completely enclosed garden for my raised beds not just because of the area squirrels, but also because the hens were interested in getting in there, too!
One of the other small projects I'm passionate about is saving our friends the monarch butterflies. I've started a butterfly garden in my front yard and am very dedicated to my milkweed plants in particular--so much so that I even put netting around the plants to protect the caterpillars once they arrive! Each year I try to defend these critters, though sometimes my success is limited.
CURRENTLY READING
The Fall of Hyperion
I've never read the Hyperion Cantos until now, so I thought I'd give this series a shot. So far I'm enjoying it thoroughly!
Shinsengumi: The Shogun's Last Samurai Corps
I first read this book about 20 years ago and am giving it a re-read. Really engaging and gives a great picture of life before, during, and after the Meiji Restoration!
